Visiting the Beverly Hills Art Show

Beverly Gardens Park sign and lily pond on a gloomy day

The iconic Beverly Gardens Park Sign and Historic Lily Pond

The Beverly Hills zip code is known for many things: outrageously expensive fashion? Check. Rodeo Drive? Check. That TV show with the overly dramatic high school kids played by AARP members? Check.

But did you know that twice a year, the city hosts artists from around the world at Beverly Gardens Park? That’s right, every spring and fall, artists take over the park for the Beverly Hills Art Show. And it’s dog-friendly!

Event Details

The seasonal Beverly Hills Art Show has been held for at least fifty years now and draws talent and crowds from all over the world. The Spring Show is held in May, and the Fall Show is held in October. I’ve attended during both seasons and can’t say I have a preference other than how the weather happens to be behaving that day.

  • Fall 2024 Show Dates: October 19 and October 20

  • Hours: 10 AM - 5 PM

  • Admission: Free

  • Weather Conditions: Rain or shine

  • Dogs Allowed: Yes, on a leash

  • Address: 9439 Santa Monica Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Artistic Offerings

Even though you’re in Beverly Hills, the art is not aimed exclusively at the wealthiest attendants. Not that there aren’t pricey pieces to be found, but there is a wide variety of offerings, both in price and style. It’s okay to simply browse, too!

Wandering the grounds, you’ll see sculptures, paintings, photography, mixed media, jewelry…the list goes on. Most of the time, the artists are present and happy to tell you about their craft.

Sculptures from one of the artists

Sometimes I’ve picked up something to bring home. Other times, I’ve just enjoyed the experience. Although some artists return with regularity, there are always new artists to check out. And if you do find something you love, you might want to jump on it because the artist (or piece) might not be around the following season.

Additional Information

The Art Show offers a great opportunity to experience Beverly Hills while also supporting local and international artists. Plan to spend a few hours and wear comfortable walking shoes. While bottled water is often available near the information section, it's a good idea to bring some with you, especially if you're bringing your dog along.

Parking Tips

There are many public parking lots along Santa Monica Boulevard, directly across from Beverly Gardens Park. Be aware this event is popular, and the garages do fill up as the day goes on. If you find yourself out of luck with the immediate spots, there are several lots sprinkled throughout Beverly Hills. All lots are paid, and some charge more than others, so be sure to read the signs to avoid any surprises. There is street parking, too, but I wouldn’t count on finding an open spot.

For planning your visit, check out this list of city parking structures.

You might also explore ride share options if you’re planning to leave the pup at home. For easier pick up and drop off, you may want to use the church address near the park instead of the actual park location. We’ve done this a few times when Archer didn’t come with us, and it was much easier for the driver to maneuver.

Dogs and people at the art show

Attending with Dogs

Dogs are permitted as long as they are on a leash and in control of their owners. They are not permitted in the Beer and Wine Garden, although I am not entirely sure how often this rule is enforced. I’ve seen them at times but also recall not being able to enter when our pup was with us. It’s probably safer to assume you’ll have to skip the libations while visiting, but you can always check once you’re there in case things have changed.

The show can get very crowded, so keep that in mind if your dog gets stressed with too much activity. There are grassy areas throughout where you can take your dog as needed for a break.

My concern has always been the fragile nature of art. Keeping my dog close to me has been both for his comfort and mine — I definitely do not want to be responsible for knocking something over and damaging it. I have nightmares about those types of situations.

A Little More on the Beer and Wine Garden

Years ago, there were two gardens serving alcohol. One devoted primarily to beer and the other to wine. However, more recent visits have had one joint garden with seating to enjoy both drinks.

The area is fenced off and the seating is on a first come basis. In the past, there have been a couple of options for both red and white wine. I’m only an occasional beer drinker, so I’ve always opted for the wine and can’t speak to the other options.

As for food, the menu has been limited, but there are usually a couple of sandwiches and other lighter bites, such as a cheese plate.

There is usually live music playing at various points throughout the day. If you happen to take a seat in between sets, keep an eye on where the speakers are so you don’t end up having your ears blown out when it starts back up.

Food Trucks

Right in the middle of the event, you’ll come across multiple food trucks lined up on Canon Drive. Conveniently, there are picnic tables set up nearby for easier eating. The tables tend to be somewhat communal, so you will likely get a chance to chat with some new people while you’re there. Dogs are also allowed to sit with you and rest up.

The trucks change somewhat from event to event. Typically, there is enough variety that regardless of your food preferences, everyone should be able to find something they’ll enjoy. In the past, we’ve had everything from burgers to lobster rolls. Admittedly, the food has not been the highlight of our visits, but it’s always fun to try something new.

Restrooms

There are restroom options located in each block of the park. The majority are portable options, but there is a permanent public restroom located off Canon Drive if you’re seeking something more comfortable. For an idea of the overall show layout, visit the Beverly Hills Art Show’s map.

Nearby Tasty Bites with Dogs

In addition to the trucks, there are other nearby food options should you want something else in the area. I’ve listed a few within short walking distance below.

Lorenzo California offers Italian sandwiches for taking with you for home or picnicking in the park. They’re open from 11 AM - 5 PM.

Nate ‘n Al’s is a long-time fixture with a huge menu. Their outdoor patio is dog-friendly, and they are only a few blocks away from the show.

Il Pastaio is a more upscale option for Italian food within walking distance.

Alfred Coffee on Beverly Drive offers outdoor seating for some coffee and light bites before the show.
